But why is requesting a refund from a merchant better than calling your bank or credit card?

Well, calling your bank or card company means that company starts off a forced return of funds to a customer, and that generally occurs without a merchant's authorization. If customer contacts their issuing bank and requests that the company to remove the requested charge from the customer's account, this process can sometimes take longer to get a refund back to the customer due to the proper documentation that the customer's bank needs to receive in order for a chargeback to complete its process. Also, going through all this does not necessarily guaranteed that the customer's service is going to be cancelled, and it might even require an additional call by the customer to the merchant anyway.
